Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Philip van Artevelde (born around 1340 – died November 27, 1382) was a brave Flemish leader. He was the son of a famous man named Jacob van Artevelde. Because his father was so well-known, Philip's godmother was the English queen, Philippa of Hainault. She even held him when he was baptized!

Who Was Philip van Artevelde?

Philip van Artevelde grew up in a time when there was a lot of tension in Flanders. His father, Jacob, was a very important figure in the city of Ghent. People remembered Jacob for standing up for the rights of the citizens. This strong family name helped Philip become a leader himself.

Leading the Ghent Rebellion

In 1381, Philip became a key leader in Ghent. The people of Ghent were rebelling against their ruler, Count Louis II of Flanders. This fight was known as the burgher's rebellion. It was a time when citizens fought for their freedom and better conditions.

Philip led the rebels to an early victory at the Battle of Beverhoutsveld. This success was a big deal! It allowed the rebels to take control of Bruges and many other parts of Flanders. Philip's leadership brought hope to the people who wanted change.

The Battle of Roosebeke

Sadly, Philip's leadership came to an end in 1382. He was killed during the Battle of Roosebeke. This was a major battle where the Flemish rebels faced a strong army. Even though Philip fought bravely, the rebels lost this important fight.

After Philip's Death

After Philip van Artevelde died, another leader named Franz Ackerman took over the command of Ghent. Philip's life and his fight for freedom were remembered. Later, in 1834, a writer named Sir Henry Taylor even wrote a play about Philip's life.
