Philippa Ngaju Makobore is a talented electrical engineer from Uganda. She leads a special team at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). Her team works on creating new electronic devices.

Her Early Life and Schooling

Philippa went to Gayaza High School in Uganda. She later finished high school in Canada. In 2008, she earned a degree in electrical engineering. This was from the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering in Edmonton, Canada.

She also got a special certificate in embedded systems engineering. This is about designing computer systems that are part of other devices. She earned this from the University of California, Irvine in the United States.

Her Work as an Engineer

From 2009 to 2010, Philippa worked as an intern telecommunications engineer. She was at a company called MTN Group. After that, she worked as a sales engineer.

In 2011, she joined the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). She later became the head of its instrumentation division. This division focuses on creating new electronic tools.

Designing New Technologies

Philippa's team at UIRI designs and builds electronic devices. They work on projects for health care, farming, and energy. Many of their projects have won awards both in Uganda and around the world.

Her team often shares their work at big medical engineering conferences. These include events like the World Congress for Biomedical Engineering. Philippa has even led sessions at these important meetings.

Helping Hospitals with a Smart Device

In 2017, Philippa entered a competition called the Innovation Prize for Africa. She presented her invention: the electronically controlled gravity feed infusion set (ECGF). This smart device won second prize and US$25,000!

The ECGF helps control how fast fluids go into a patient's body through an IV. In East Africa, many children need IV therapy in hospitals. Giving too much fluid can be very dangerous for them. Philippa's device helps make sure patients get the right amount of fluid safely.

Awards and Recognition

  • 2016: First place Innovation Award at the 2016 World Patient Safety, Science, and Technology Summit
  • 2017: Second place Innovation Prize for Africa
