Philippe Méaille's Journey in Art
Philippe Méaille studied Pharmacy at Paris Descartes University. But while he was a student in Paris, he began collecting art. This was the start of his amazing journey in the art world.
Connecting with Art & Language
In 1994, Philippe Méaille started working with artists from the group Art & Language. He also connected with Eric Fabre, who was an art dealer or "gallerist." A gallerist helps artists sell their work and shows it to the public.
In 1996, Philippe bought many Art & Language artworks. These pieces had been bought earlier from a Swiss art dealer named Bruno Bischofberger.
Philippe once said that when he was young, he bought an Art & Language artwork. He soon realized that keeping such important art private was not good. He felt it was his job to share this collection with as many people as possible. Because of this, he has gathered the world's biggest collection of Art & Language works.
Sharing His Collection
In 2000, Philippe Méaille placed his collection in the Château de la Bainerie. This old castle used to be a summer camp. The Art & Language artworks filled the large 50,000 square foot area of the château.
In 2006, Philippe worked with the Nantes school of Beaux-arts to create a public art show. In 2011, he announced a long-term loan. This meant he would lend 800 of his Art & Language artworks to the MACBA for a long time.
In 2014, Jill Silverman van Coenegrachts became the curator for Philippe's collection. A curator is someone who manages and organizes art collections and exhibitions.
A Big Art Show
Also in 2014, the MACBA museum held a major art show about Art & Language. It was called Art & Language uncompleted: The Philippe Méaille Collection. This show featured many artworks that Philippe had loaned to the museum.
Creating His Own Museum
In 2015, Philippe Méaille signed a 25-year lease for the Château de Montsoreau. This beautiful castle is in the Loire valley in France. In the same year, Philippe started the Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art. About 80 artworks from his collection are always on display there.
In 2017, Philippe decided to bring his entire collection back from the MACBA museum. He moved all the artworks to his own museum, the Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art. He said that the main reason for this was the changing political situation in Catalonia.
