Discovering Art & Language
Philippe Méaille started collecting art when he was a student in Paris. In 1994, he began connecting with the artists from the Art & Language group. This group is known for its unique and thought-provoking art.
A Special Art Collection
In 1996, Méaille bought many Art & Language artworks from a Swiss bank. These pieces had been bought earlier in 1972. He once said that keeping these artworks private felt wrong. He believed they should be shared with as many people as possible. Because of this, he felt it was his job to make his collection open to everyone. Today, his collection is the biggest in the world for Art & Language works.
Sharing Art with the Public
Philippe Méaille has always wanted to share his art collection. He has found different ways to make it available for people to see.
Art at the Château de la Bainerie
In 2000, Méaille displayed his collection at the Château de la Bainerie. This large castle used to be a summer camp. The Art & Language artworks were spread out across the huge 50,000 square foot area. In 2006, he worked with the Nantes school of Beaux-arts to organize a public art show.
Working with MACBA
In 2011, Méaille announced a long-term loan of 800 Art & Language artworks. He lent these pieces to the MACBA in Spain. In 2014, the MACBA held a big exhibition of Art & Language works. It was called Art & Language uncompleted: The Philippe Méaille Collection. This show featured many pieces from Méaille's collection.
Creating a New Museum
In 2015, Philippe Méaille signed a 25-year lease for the Château de Montsoreau. This beautiful castle is located in the famous Loire valley in France. In the same year, he founded the Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art. About 80 artworks from his collection are always on display there.
In 2017, Méaille decided to bring his entire collection back to the Château de Montsoreau. He chose not to continue his agreement with the MACBA. He explained that political changes in Catalonia were the main reason for this decision. Now, all his amazing Art & Language works are together in one place for everyone to enjoy.
