Philotheus Boehner (born Heinrich Boehner; 17 February 1901 – 22 May 1955) was a smart scholar and a member of the Franciscan order. He was famous for studying and writing about ideas from the Middle Ages.

The Life of Philotheus Boehner

Philotheus Boehner was born Heinrich Boehner in Lichtenau, Westphalia, Germany. In 1920, he joined the Franciscan Order. This is a group of Catholic religious people who follow the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. When he joined, he was given the name Philotheus, which means "friend of God."

In 1927, he became a priest. He was very sick at the time, but he got better. While he was recovering, he started his work as a scholar. He began by translating a book about Saint Bonaventure, a famous Franciscan thinker from the Middle Ages. He became good friends with the author, Étienne Gilson, in the 1930s.

In the summer of 1940, Boehner moved to Saint Bonaventure College. This school is now a university. There, he taught about Franciscan philosophy. He also helped to build the Franciscan Institute into a major center. This institute became a place where scholars from all over the world could study Franciscan history and ideas.

Philotheus Boehner's Scholarly Works

Because of Philotheus Boehner's hard work, the Franciscan Institute produced many important scholarly books. Between 1944 and 1955, they published over thirty books. These books covered different topics like philosophy, theology, and history.

One of his most important projects was creating a special edition of William of Ockham's writings. William of Ockham was another important thinker from the Middle Ages. Boehner worked with Professor Ernest Moody on this big project.

Some of his well-known books include:

  • The History of the Franciscan School, which looked at different Franciscan thinkers.
  • Medieval Logic. An Outline of Its Development from 1250 to c.1400, which explained how logic developed in the Middle Ages.
  • Collected Articles on Ockham, a collection of his writings about William of Ockham.
