Phipps Garden Apartments are a special group of apartment buildings located in the Sunnyside Gardens neighborhood of Queens, New York City. They were built in 1931 by Phipps Houses. This group is a charity that wanted to create good, affordable homes for families. They worked with Henry Wright, who helped design the Sunnyside Gardens area.

The apartments are found on 39th Avenue, between 50th and 52nd Streets. They are right next to Sunnyside Gardens Park and the Sunnyside Yard train tracks.

What Makes Phipps Garden Apartments Special?

The buildings were designed by a famous architect named Clarence Stein. They are made of brick and have cool designs in the brickwork. You can also see curved steel fire escapes on the outside.

A Beautiful Courtyard

The apartment buildings surround a large, beautiful garden in the middle. This garden was designed by a landscape architect named Marjorie Sewell Cautley. It gives residents a nice green space to enjoy.

Growing Over Time

Later, in the late 1930s, more buildings were added to the north. These new buildings were placed between the first apartments and the Sunnyside Yard railroad tracks.

Originally, there was also a children's playground across the street. Marjorie Sewell Cautley designed this playground too. However, Phipps Houses closed the playground by the 1990s.

An Important Historical Place

In 2007, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission officially recognized Phipps Garden Apartments. They were made part of the Sunnyside Gardens Historic District. This means the apartments are considered an important historical place in New York City.
