Phyla is a group of plants in the verbena family, called Verbenaceae. These plants are also known as fogfruit or frogfruit. The name Phyla comes from an old Greek word, phyle, which means "tribe". This name probably refers to how the flowers grow close together, or how the plants spread out like a mat on the ground.

Some plants that used to be in a different group called Lippia are now part of Phyla. People sometimes still call these plants "lippia". A few species from the Phyla group, like the Aztec Sweet Herb (P. dulcis), are even used in cooking!

Types of Phyla Plants

Here are some of the different types of plants found in the Phyla group:

  • Phyla canescens – This plant is known as hairy frogfruit or fogfruit.
  • Phyla chinensis
  • Phyla cuneifolia – You might hear this one called wedgeleaf frogfruit, fogfruit, or just wedgeleaf.
  • Phyla dulcis – This is the famous Aztec sweet herb, also known as honeyherb. In Spanish, it's called hierba dulce, and in Nahuatl, it's tzopelic-xihuitl.
  • Phyla fruticosa – This plant is sometimes called diamondleaf frogfruit or fogfruit.
  • Phyla × intermedia – This is known as intermediate frogfruit or fogfruit.
  • Phyla lanceolata – People call this one lanceleaf frogfruit or fogfruit.
  • Phyla nodiflora – This plant has many names, including turkey tangle and sawtooth frogfruit or fogfruit.
  • Phyla stoechadifolia – This is known as southern frogfruit or fogfruit.
