About Phyllis Matthewman
Phyllis Matthewman was born in Leeds, England. Her birth name was Phyllis Barton. Her father, Thomas Barton, managed an insurance company. She had one sister named Joyce.
In 1930, Phyllis married Sydney Matthewman. Sydney worked as a literary agent, which means he helped writers find publishers for their books. His father owned a printing company called the Swan Press in Leeds. Phyllis and Sydney did not have any children.
Phyllis had a close friend named Elinor Brent-Dyer. Elinor was also a famous children's author, known for her "Chalet School" series. Phyllis's aunt actually introduced them when they were children! Sydney Matthewman even became Elinor Brent-Dyer's literary agent.
In 1964, Elinor Brent-Dyer moved in with the Matthewmans. They first lived in half of a house called Albury Edge in Redhill, Surrey. Then, in 1965, they bought a house together in Redhill called Gryphons. Elinor lived with them until she passed away in 1969.
