Frédéric Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 is a famous piece of music for the piano. It's often called "The Funeral March" because of its very well-known third part. Chopin finished this sonata in 1839 in Nohant, France. However, he wrote the "Funeral March" part earlier, in 1837.

What is a Piano Sonata?

A piano sonata is a long piece of music written for a solo piano. It usually has several different parts, called movements. Each movement has its own mood and speed. Think of it like a story with different chapters.

The Four Parts of the Sonata

Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 has four main parts, or movements:

  • First Movement: Grave – Doppio movimento
    • This part starts slowly and seriously (Grave). Then it quickly changes to a faster, more energetic section (Doppio movimento). It sets a dramatic mood for the whole piece.
  • Second Movement: Scherzo
    • A scherzo is usually a lively and playful part. This one is fast and powerful, but it also has a calmer, more beautiful middle section.
  • Third Movement: Marche funèbre: Lento
    • This is the most famous part, the "Funeral March." It's slow and sad, making you think of a funeral procession. It has a very emotional and memorable tune.
  • Fourth Movement: Finale: Presto
    • The last movement is very fast and short (Presto). It sounds like a whirlwind or a rush of notes. It's quite mysterious and ends the sonata with a powerful feeling.

Why is it so Famous?

"The Funeral March" part of this sonata is known all over the world. It has been used in many movies, TV shows, and even at real funerals. Its sad and serious tune makes it instantly recognizable. Chopin himself was a brilliant composer and pianist. He wrote many beautiful and emotional pieces for the piano. This sonata is one of his most important works.
