The Pilgrim Congregational Church is a historic church building in Taunton, Massachusetts. It is a Congregational Church located at 45 Broadway. The church was designed by the famous architect Richard Upjohn. It was built in 1852.

The group of people who started this church first formed in 1823. They separated from the First Parish Church because they wanted to worship in a different way. This church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 5, 1984. This means it is an important historical place.

What the Church Looks Like

The Pilgrim Congregational Church is on the east side of Broadway. It is just north of the Taunton Green. The church is made from strong fieldstone. It has a wide roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gabled roof.

The Tower and Entrance

A square tower sticks out a little from the front of the church. This tower divides the front into three parts. The main door is at the bottom of the tower. It is set back under a round arch.

Windows and Details

The windows on the front and tower are tall and narrow. They have a pointed arch shape, like Gothic windows. Higher up on the tower is the belfry, where the bells would be. It has three tall, round-arched openings on each side. The top of the tower has a low, pointed roof with strong supports.

The windows on the sides of the church are large. They are round-arched and have beautiful stained glass. At the back of the main church, a small chapel was added in 1915.

A Bit of History

The church building was designed by architect Richard Upjohn. He was a very well-known architect in his time. The church was built in 1852. The group of people who formed the church first met in an older wooden building. That building was just north of where the stone church stands today. This church is the second-oldest church building in the center of Taunton.
