Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pimenio (also known as Pymenius) was an important religious leader in ancient Spain. He served as the Bishop of Assidonia, which is now a city called Medina Sidonia. He lived during the 7th century, a time when the Visigoths ruled Spain.

Who Was Bishop Pimenio?

Pimenio was a bishop, which is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. His job was to guide the people in his area, called a diocese. Pimenio's diocese was Assidonia, a significant city in the Visigothic Kingdom.

Pimenio's Role in Church Councils

Bishops like Pimenio often met together to discuss important church matters. These meetings were called councils. Pimenio attended two major councils held in Toledo, the capital city at the time.

  • He was present at the Fourth Council of Toledo in the year 633 AD.
  • He also attended the Sixth Council of Toledo in 638 AD.
  • For the Seventh Council of Toledo in 646 AD, Pimenio sent a priest named Ubiliensio to represent him. These councils helped shape the rules and beliefs of the church.

Dedicating Churches and Finding Relics

Pimenio was very active in his diocese. He helped dedicate several churches, making them ready for worship. When a church was dedicated, it often received special items called relics. Relics are usually small pieces of something holy, like bones or belongings of saints. Pimenio placed relics of martyrs (people who died for their faith) in these churches.

You can still find old inscriptions (writings carved into stone) that mention Pimenio's work.

  • One inscription from 630 AD is in the chapel of Saints in Medina Sidonia.
  • Another from 644 AD is in the Saint Ambrosio church in Vejer de la Frontera.
  • A third from 648 AD was found in Salpensa, near Utrera.
  • The last one from 662 AD is in Alcalá de los Gazules.

Pimenio's Long Leadership

Pimenio worked hard to improve his diocese. He made many important changes and updates. His time as bishop, known as his episcopate, lasted for at least 18 years. He served from 629 AD until after 646 AD. This shows he was a dedicated and long-serving leader.

Where Pimenio Was Buried

After his death, Pimenio was buried in a monastery. This monastery was in a village called Aquis, which is now Talavera de la Reina. Years later, in 681 AD, a Visigothic king named Wamba honored Pimenio. King Wamba established a new bishopric (a bishop's area) in Aquis. This new bishopric was connected to the main church authority in Merida.
