The Pinecrest Diner is a well-known restaurant in San Francisco, California. It's famous for being open all night, serving classic diner food. It's also known for a very unusual event that happened there involving an order of eggs.

A Strange Incident at the Diner

On July 24, 1997, a customer at the Pinecrest Diner asked for poached eggs. This dish wasn't usually on the menu. The chef, Hashem Zayed, agreed to make them. However, Helen Menicou, a waitress who had worked with Zayed for almost twenty years, stepped in. She told him not to make the special order in front of customers and other staff.

The next morning, Zayed came to work feeling very upset. He had a small handgun with him. He then caused a tragic incident involving Menicou. She was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away a short time later.

The Impact of the Event

This sad event deeply affected many people who knew Helen Menicou from her many years at Pinecrest. The public was also very moved. Five hundred people attended her funeral. Even the California State Assembly, which is like the state's government meeting, paused its work on July 28 to honor her.

Over the years, this incident has become a well-known story in San Francisco. People still talk about it as part of the city's folklore. No clear reason was ever found for what happened, other than the argument over the poached eggs. Those eggs are still not on the menu today. The customer who ordered them was never identified. Hashem Zayed himself passed away just over three years later, on August 13, 2000, due to a brain tumor.
