Pink Peacock (Yiddish: די ראָזעווע פּאַווע‎, Di Rozeve Pave) is a special café and a community space in the Govanhill area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is known for being a welcoming place for everyone. The café offers vegan food and drinks. It also lets customers pay what they can afford. Pink Peacock officially opened its doors in 2021. Its opening was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How Pink Peacock Started

Pink Peacock was created by Morgan Holleb and Joe Isaac. They were both involved with a group called Irn-Ju. This group focused on Jewish community ideas in Scotland. In 2019, Morgan and Joe decided to open a café. They wanted it to be a place that celebrated Yiddish culture. They also wanted it to be open and friendly to all people.

They chose the name Pink Peacock. In Yiddish, this is די ראָזעווע פּאַווע (di rozeve pave). The peacock is a traditional symbol in Yiddish culture. The founders noticed that there were not many Jewish or Yiddish spaces in Scotland. Their café became the first physical Yiddish-focused place to open in many years.

In July 2020, Pink Peacock asked for help from the public. They started a crowdfunding campaign. They hoped to raise £10,000 to help run the café for three months. By August 2020, they had successfully raised even more money. They collected a total of £15,885.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays for the café's opening. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Joe and Morgan still helped their community. They gave out food packages in Govanhill. They also organized online events for Jewish and other community groups.

How the Café Works

Pink Peacock uses a "pay-what-you-can" system. This means customers are told the suggested price for items. However, they can choose to pay any amount they are able to. The café does not serve alcohol. All the food and drinks are vegan. This means they do not use any animal products.

Outside the café, there is a community fridge. This fridge is filled with food for anyone to take. Besides food, the café also sells items related to Jewish culture and social justice. The café is run as a cooperative. This means that workers and community members help make decisions about how the café operates.

Using the Yiddish Language

Pink Peacock actively uses the Yiddish language. Their website has a Yiddish version. They also use Yiddish on their social media, like Twitter. This is different from many other groups that focus on Yiddish.

In 2020, Morgan Holleb explained why Yiddish is important to them. She said that Yiddish helps connect with Jewish culture. It is a language that is not linked to a specific country. It is a language of Jewish people living all over the world.
