The History of Pizza Cutters
Did you know the first modern pizza cutter wasn't actually made for pizza? It's true! A man named David S. Morgan invented and patented the first wheel-style cutter on September 20, 1892. But his invention was originally designed to cut wallpaper! Over time, people realized it was perfect for slicing pizzas too.
There's even a "World's Largest" Pizza Cutter! You can find this giant utensil in Casey, Illinois, right in front of The Greathouse of Pizza. It's a fun reminder of how useful this simple tool is.
Different Kinds of Pizza Cutters
There are two main types of pizza cutters you might see in kitchens today.
The Wheel Pizza Cutter
The most common type has a round, sharp wheel that spins. You hold a handle and roll the wheel across the pizza to make a clean cut. Many people find this type of cutter very easy to use. Besides pizza, some people even use these wheel cutters for craft projects!
The Mezzaluna Pizza Cutter
The other type of pizza cutter is a large, curved knife. It's called a mezzaluna, which is Italian for "half moon," because of its shape. To cut pizza with a mezzaluna, you rock the curved blade back and forth. This motion slices through the pizza. Mezzalunas come in different sizes, and some even have two blades. These double-bladed mezzalunas are often used to chop herbs or vegetables very finely.
