Plad, Missouri facts for kids
Plad is a small, unincorporated community located in the northeastern part of Dallas County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's usually managed by the county.
Plad is situated right on Missouri Route 64. If you were driving there, you'd find it about five miles east of another community called Pumpkin Center. It's also about nine miles northeast of the larger town of Buffalo. The area is also known for being near the very beginning, or "headwaters," of a stream called Jakes Creek, which starts just northwest of the community.
The Story of Plad's Name
The name "Plad" has a bit of a funny story behind it! Back in 1891, the people living in this community were very excited because they were finally getting their own post office. They wanted to name it "Glad" to show how happy they were about this new service.
A Postal Mix-Up
However, when the name was officially registered, there was a mistake. Someone at the post office accidentally spelled "Glad" as "Plad." This spelling error was never corrected, and so the community has been known as Plad ever since. The post office itself served the community for many years, operating from 1891 until it finally closed in 1960.
