Planck epoch facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Planck epoch was the very first moment in the history of our universe. It happened right at the beginning, from zero seconds up to about 10⁻⁴³ seconds. That's an incredibly tiny fraction of a second!

During this time, the universe was super hot and extremely dense. It was so hot that even the smallest particles couldn't form yet. Also, the four main forces we know today – like gravity and electromagnetism – were all combined into one single, super force.

Scientists use something called the Planck scale to describe this time. Our current physics theories don't fully work at this scale. This means we can't perfectly calculate everything that happened back then.

What Was the Planck Epoch Like?

At the Planck epoch, the universe was unbelievably small. Because it was so tiny, the quantum effects of gravity were very strong. Think of quantum effects as the strange rules that apply to very, very small things.

Scientists believe that these quantum effects of gravity controlled everything during this time. The super force, which included gravity, was the only force present.

What Happened After?

After the Planck epoch, the universe entered the grand unification epoch. This is when gravity separated from the other combined forces. The universe was still incredibly hot and dense, but it was starting to cool down just a tiny bit.
