Plattsburgh State Art Museum facts for kids
The Plattsburgh State Art Museum is a special art museum located at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh, New York. What makes it unique is its idea of being a "museum without walls." This means that instead of keeping all its art in one building, the museum displays its amazing collection all around the university campus!
The museum has a huge collection of over 4,600 pieces of art and historical items. These range from very old objects to modern art and sculptures. You can see these collections in three main galleries, a sculpture court, and other display areas spread across the campus. It's like an art treasure hunt!

Exploring the Art Spaces
The Plattsburgh State Art Museum has several cool places where you can discover art. Each space offers something different, from famous paintings to student creations.
Rockwell Kent Gallery
The Rockwell Kent Gallery is found inside the Feinberg Library. This gallery is dedicated to the famous artist Rockwell Kent. Here, you can see many of his paintings, prints, drawings, and even dinnerware he designed. There are also photographs and some of his personal items on display. The Plattsburgh State Art Museum has one of the largest collections of Rockwell Kent's work in the entire United States!
This gallery also shows other artworks from the museum's main collection. Plus, they often change the exhibits of Kent's work, so there's always something new to see.
Burke Gallery
The Burke Gallery is the main spot for changing art shows at the museum. It's located in the Myers Fine Arts Building. This gallery features art from the museum's own collections, works by modern artists, and even traveling exhibitions from other places. You can also see art created by the university's faculty (teachers) and talented students here.
Myers Lobby Gallery
Right at the entrance of the Myers Fine Arts building, you'll find the Myers Lobby Gallery. This space is special because it showcases art installations created by students from the university's Studio Arts Program. It's a great way to see what young artists are creating!
Nina Winkel Sculpture Court
Also in the Myers Fine Arts Building is the Nina Winkel Sculpture Court. This court features beautiful sculptures made by Nina Winkel (1905-1990). Her sculptures are crafted from materials like terracotta, stone, bronze, and copper. This is the largest permanent exhibition in the United States dedicated to the work of just one woman artist!
Plattsburgh Sculpture Park
The Plattsburgh Sculpture Park is an ongoing project that brings large, impressive sculptures to different outdoor locations around the campus. The Sculpture Terrace is an outdoor area where new contemporary sculptures are displayed every one or two years. Many of the artworks you see displayed around campus were actually created by students attending the university.
