Platy Fish
Platy fish belong to a group of fish called Xiphophorus. There are two main species that people usually call platies: the Southern platyfish and the Variable platyfish. They are closely related to other popular aquarium fish like swordtails and mollies.
What Do Platies Look Like?
Platies are small fish, usually growing to about 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4 to 6 centimeters) long. They have a short, stout body shape. What makes them so popular are their amazing colors! Where Do Platies Live?

What Do Platies Eat?
Platies are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and small animals. In their natural habitat, they munch on algae, tiny insects, and small worms. Reproduction and Life Cycle
Platy fish are livebearers, which means the mother fish gives birth to live, fully formed baby fish instead of laying eggs. A female platy can give birth to anywhere from 20 to 100 fry (baby fish) at a time. The babies are very tiny when they are born but can swim and find food right away. It takes about 4 to 6 months for a baby platy to grow into an adult fish.
Platies as Aquarium Pets
Because platies are hardy and peaceful, they are often recommended for beginner fish keepers. They need a tank that is at least 10 gallons in size, with clean, warm water. They do best when kept in groups, as they are social fish. A well-cared-for platy can live for about 2 to 3 years in an aquarium.
