What is a Player-Manager?
A player-manager is a sports term for a team manager who is also signed up to play for the team. This often happens in association football (soccer).
Why Does This Happen?
Sometimes, a team's manager leaves suddenly. The team's owner or chairman needs to find a new person quickly. They might ask a coach to take over for a short time. Or, they might ask one of the team's most experienced players to step in.
If this player does a good job as a temporary manager, they might get the job full-time. This means they become a player-manager.
Sometimes, a player who doesn't have a team (a free agent) might join a new team as a manager. They might also offer to play for the team if needed.
Player-Managers in History
Player-managers and player-coaches used to be quite common. This was especially true in the early days of baseball in the United States.
One famous player-manager was Pete Rose. He started managing the Cincinnati Reds in 1985. That was near the end of his playing career. Fred Clarke was a player-manager for the longest time in baseball history.
