Plaza de Toros, Calatayud facts for kids
The Plaza de Toros de Calatayud is a special building called a bullring. It is located in the city of Calatayud, which is in the Province of Zaragoza. This area is part of Aragon, a region in northeastern Spain. You can find it on Calle Barón de Warsage, in a place known as Paraje de Margarita.
History of the Bullring
For a long time, the spot where the bullring now stands was a market place. People used to hold festivals and even bullfights there.
In the 1870s, people decided to build a proper bullring. They wanted the money earned from events to help the town's Hospice. A Hospice is a place that cares for people who are sick or in need.
Building work started on April 23, 1877. The architect, Mariano Medarde, led the project. The bullring was finished quickly, by September 9, 1877.
What it's Like Today
The bullring has a unique shape with eight sides, like an octagon. It can hold many people, up to 8,830 spectators! These seats are spread out over three different levels.
The building also has stables where 30 horses can stay. There are also three corrals, which are enclosed areas for animals.
Bullfights usually happen in August and September. These events are part of two important local festivals. They are the Fiestas de San Roque and the Fiestas de la Virgen de la Peña.
