The plumbeous vireo (Vireo plumbeus) is a small songbird found in North America. It lives from places like Montana and South Dakota all the way south to Mexico. This bird travels a lot! It moves to warmer southern areas for winter. You can usually find it in open pine forests.
What Does a Plumbeous Vireo Look Like?
Plumbeous vireos are about 4.75 inches (12 cm) long. They have a gray head, back, and sides. Their belly is a whitish color. Look for a bright white ring around their eyes. They also have white stripes on their wings.
The Vireo's Song
This bird sings a lot! Its song is made of short, rough whistling sounds. Each sound is about two seconds apart. The sounds often go up and down, like the bird is asking a question and then answering it.
Nesting and Eggs
The plumbeous vireo builds a cup-shaped nest. It uses strips of bark and soft downy material. The nest is usually placed in the fork of a tree branch. The female bird lays 3 to 5 white eggs. These eggs often have some brown spots on them.
