European settlers first arrived in the Pōhuehue area in the 1860s. They sometimes called the place Little Scotland or Huhue. The first families to settle here were the Wilsons, Shaws, and Perrys. The Shaw family started farming in 1864 and built a historic farmhouse. The Perry family created an orchard and a plant nursery.

School Days in Old Pōhuehue

In 1899, the Huhue School opened its doors. It was only open three days a week because the teacher also taught at another school in Mahurangi West. In 1912, a post office opened in Pōhuehue. Later, in 1916, the school's name was changed to Pōhuehue School.

Building the Pōhuehue Viaduct

Work on the Pōhuehue Viaduct began in 1928. This important bridge was built to make State Highway 1 straighter and safer. It helped the road avoid a very steep gully. The new road was actually built right over the old school playground!
