The Police Magistrates, Metropolis Act 1833 was an important law passed in the United Kingdom. It helped to improve how justice was handled in London. This Act was given "royal assent" (approved by the King) on 18 June 1833.
This law built upon earlier efforts to set up police offices. These offices were like early police stations and courts. The Act was especially important for the office in Wapping, a part of London.

What Was This Law About?
The main goal of the Police Magistrates, Metropolis Act 1833 was to make the justice system better in London. It focused on the "police offices" that had been created in 1792. These offices were places where early police work and court hearings happened.
Improving Justice in London
The Act helped these police offices grow. It laid the groundwork for them to become proper police courts. Later, these police courts evolved into what we now call "magistrates courts." These are courts where less serious cases are heard.
The River Police and Metropolitan Police
A key part of the Act's impact was on the River Police. This was a special police force that looked after the River Thames. In 1839, the River Police became part of the new Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police is London's main police force. The River Police then became known as the Thames Division.
How Long Did the Law Last?
The Police Magistrates, Metropolis Act 1833 was not meant to last forever. It was initially set to continue until 1 July 1838.
The 1837 Renewal Act
To keep the improvements going, a new law was passed. This was the Justices of the Peace in Metropolis Act 1837. This Act renewed the 1833 law. It made sure the important work of the police offices and the justice system continued.
