Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union facts for kids
The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, often called the Politburo, was the most important group that made decisions for the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Think of it as the main leadership team that guided the entire country.
It was first created in October 1917. Later, it was officially started again in March 1919, during a big meeting called the 8th Congress of the Bolshevik Party. For a time, from 1952 to 1966, this powerful group was known by a different name: the Presidium. The Politburo stopped existing in 1991 when the Soviet Union itself broke apart.
What Was the Politburo?
The Politburo was like the top committee that ran the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. It was made up of the most powerful leaders. These leaders decided on all the major policies and plans for the country. They had a lot of influence over daily life and big national decisions.
How It Started
The idea for the Politburo came about during the Russian Revolution. It was meant to be a small, quick-acting group that could make important choices fast. After the revolution, it became a permanent part of the Communist Party's structure. Its members were chosen from the larger Central Committee of the Party.
Its End
The Politburo continued to be the main decision-making body for many decades. However, as the Soviet Union faced more and more problems, its power began to weaken. When the Soviet Union finally dissolved in 1991, the Politburo also came to an end. This marked a huge change in the history of Russia and the world.
