In 1982, she completed her Ph.D. in mathematics. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a subject. Her Ph.D. research was about "Köthe duals and matrix transformations." A famous mathematician named Peng Yee Lee helped her with this work. Later, in 1992, she earned another doctorate degree from Nagoya University in Japan.

Polly Wee Sy was a leader in the world of mathematics. She was the head of the mathematics department at the University of the Philippines Diliman two times. First, from 1994 to 1996, and then again from 1999 to 2002. She also led the Southeast Asia Mathematical Society as its president from 1998 to 1999.
