Pomaderris adnata is a special kind of shrub that spreads out. It belongs to the Rhamnaceae plant family. This plant is endemic to New South Wales, Australia. This means it only grows naturally in that one place! It has smooth, green leaves that are shaped like an oval or a spoon. In spring, you can see its lovely pale yellow flowers.

About the Pomaderris adnata Plant

Pomaderris adnata is a shrub that can grow about 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) tall. Its new branches are covered in soft, greyish hairs that look like tiny stars.

The leaves of this plant are narrow and oval-shaped. They are usually about 1.5 to 3 centimeters (0.6 to 1.2 inches) long and 3 to 8 centimeters (1.2 to 3.1 inches) wide. The top side of the leaf is smooth. But if you look underneath, you'll see it's covered in those same greyish, star-shaped hairs. The edges of the leaves often curve downwards. Some leaves are smooth, while others have small, wavy dips along their edges.

The flowers are a soft pale yellow color. They grow in small groups where the leaves meet the stem. After the flowers, the plant produces a seed capsule. This capsule is also covered in star-shaped hairs. Even the smaller veins on the leaves have tiny, flat hairs that can be yellowish, rusty, or grey. This plant usually blooms in the spring.

How it Got its Name

The plant Pomaderris adnata was officially named in 1997. Two scientists, Neville Grant Walsh and Fiona Coates, gave it this name. They wrote about it in a science journal called Muelleria.

Where This Plant Lives

This special plant grows in a specific type of forest called a dry sclerophyll forest. It also lives in woodland heath areas. You can only find Pomaderris adnata in one place: on the escarpment (a steep slope or cliff) south of Sydney, near a spot called Sublime Point.

Protecting Pomaderris adnata

Pomaderris adnata is considered an endangered species. This means there aren't many of these plants left, and they are at risk of disappearing forever. The government of New South Wales protects it under a law called the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW).

There are a few reasons why this plant is in danger:

  • There are only a small number of these plants in the world.
  • People sometimes leave trash and litter where the plants grow.
  • Work done on roads nearby can harm the plants.
  • Other plants, called weeds, can invade the area and take over the space and resources that Pomaderris adnata needs to grow.

It's important to protect this unique plant so it can continue to thrive in New South Wales!
