Pommac facts for kids
Pommac is a special fizzy drink from Sweden. It's made from fruits and berries. What makes it unique is that it's aged in wooden barrels for three months. This makes it taste a bit like wine, even though it has no alcohol! The name "Pommac" might come from fancy drinks like "Pommery" (a type of Champagne) and "Cognac," because it's aged in barrels just like them. Another idea is that the name comes from the French word "pomace," which means the leftover parts of pressed fruits. The exact recipe for Pommac is a secret!
How Pommac Started
Pommac was first created in 1919. A businessman named Anders Lindahl moved to Stockholm, Sweden. He started a company called Fructus Fabriker. This is where he began making Pommac. The special recipe was made by an inventor from Finland.
Pommac was first made for wealthy people. It was a fancy drink that didn't have alcohol. It was a great choice for parties and special events where people wanted a drink that felt special, like wine, but without the alcohol.
Pommac in the USA
For a few years, from 1963 to 1969, a company called Dr Pepper sold a version of Pommac in the United States. This version was a diet drink. It came in small bottles.
It took a while for people to get used to the taste of this diet Pommac. Sales were slow. After six years, the sweetener used in the drink was banned. Because of this, Dr Pepper stopped selling Pommac in the USA. However, the original Pommac in Sweden always used sugar to make it sweet.
A Special Drink
Today, Pommac is still enjoyed in Sweden. It is often served as a non-alcoholic choice at celebrations. It's a popular drink for festive times, like a non-alcoholic version of champagne.
Saving Pommac
In late 2004, the company Carlsberg in Denmark said they would stop making Pommac. They said it was for money reasons. But people really loved Pommac! Many fans started a petition, and over 50,000 people signed it. They wanted Pommac to stay. Because so many people asked for it, Carlsberg decided to keep making and selling Pommac. This shows how much people enjoy this unique drink!
