The Pomona City Stables is an old building in Pomona, California. It was built in 1909 to keep horses that belonged to the city. It's also known as the Pomona City Yards Brick Building. This building is a cool example of how cities used to operate before cars were common!

A Look Back: Building the Stables

The Pomona City Stables cost about $6,000 to build. That was a lot of money back in 1909! A local architect named Ferdinand Davis designed the building. He was part of the firm Davis and Higgs.

Who Was Ferdinand Davis?

Ferdinand Davis was a busy architect in Pomona. He designed many other important buildings. Some of his other works include the Currier House (built in 1907), the Masonic Lodge, the Ebell Club, and Trinity Methodist Church. He helped shape the look of early Pomona.

Opening Day for the Stables

The stables opened in April 1909. They were located on White Avenue, near the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. The Los Angeles Times newspaper said the stables were "models of convenience." They also mentioned there was "ample room" for the city's horses and tools. When it first opened, the building housed 22 city horses and a caretaker.

Why Are the Stables Important?

The Pomona City Stables are believed to be one of the oldest city-owned buildings still standing in California. This makes it a special piece of history!

Becoming a Historic Landmark

In 2003, a group called the Pomona Historic Preservation Commission suggested that the stables should be recognized as a historic landmark. This means it's an important place worth protecting. The building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 2004. This is a list of places across the country that are important to American history.

The Stables Today: A Sad State

Even though the stables are on the National Register, they have not been kept in good condition. The building is in a fenced-off area used by the City of Pomona. This area stores city vehicles, fuel, and other materials.

Damage and Deterioration

The building has fallen into serious disrepair. It looks quite old and worn out. After an earthquake in July 2008, city officials put up a sign. This sign restricted access to the stables because they were in such bad shape. The sign warned people not to go inside. Sadly, parts of the stable walls collapsed in 2017 after heavy winter rains. It is now very likely that the entire building will be torn down.
