Pony glass facts for kids
A pony glass is a special type of small glass. It's often used for tiny servings of drinks. This name can mean two different kinds of small glasses.
What is a Pony Glass?
A pony glass can be one of two things:
- A small beer glass: This glass holds about 140 ml (about a quarter of a pint). It's a tiny size for a drink.
- A small, stemmed glass: This glass is about one ounce in size. It looks a bit like a tiny glass with a stem. People use it for small sips of flavorful drinks, sometimes called "cordials" or "liqueurs." Because of this, it's also known as a "cordial glass" or "liqueur glass."
Pony as a Measure
A pony can also be a special tool used to measure liquids, especially in places where drinks are mixed. It's usually half the size of another measuring tool called a "jigger." A traditional pony held about 28 ml. It was often connected to the bottom of a jigger. Today, the exact sizes of ponies and jiggers can be different.
Why is it Called a Pony?
The name "pony" comes from the 19th century. It's used because the glass is very small, just like a pony is a small horse. You might hear similar terms like "pony bottle" for a small bottle or "pony keg" for a small barrel.
A Little Bit of History
The pony glass was very popular around the late 1800s. This time was known for many interesting and fancy bar tools and glasses.
