The Portage River (also known as rivière du Portage in French) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Bécancour River, which then joins the mighty St. Lawrence River. This river runs through the towns of Saint-Valère and Daveluyville. It is located in the Arthabaska Regional County Municipality in the Centre-du-Québec area.
Geography
The Portage River is part of a larger water system. Its main water areas, called hydrographic slopes, include:
- The Bécancour River to the north.
- The Pimbina river and the Blanche River to the east.
- The Bulstrode River to the south.
- The Blanche River to the west.
The Portage River starts in a farming area in Saint-Valère. This is south of the Defoy hamlet in Daveluyville. It begins east of Route 261 and north of the Bulstrode River.
From its start, the Portage River flows for about 12.5 kilometres (7.8 mi) (about 7.8 miles). It mostly goes through farmland, but some parts are forested.
- For the first 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) (0.9 miles), it flows north through Saint-Valère.
- Then, it flows north for 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) (2.2 miles) through Daveluyville. It passes west of the Defoy hamlet and goes under Highway 20.
- Finally, it flows north for 7.5 kilometres (4.7 mi) (4.7 miles) until it reaches its end.
The Portage River joins the Bécancour River on its south side. This meeting point is just downstream from Portage Island and the village of Daveluyville.
