Portia once had its own post office! This post office opened in 1894 and helped people send and receive letters and packages. It was an important part of the community for about nine years, closing its doors in 1903.

Many people believe Portia was named after a famous character from literature. The name might come from Portia, a clever and strong heroine in William Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice. William Shakespeare was a very famous English writer who lived a long time ago, in the 1500s and early 1600s. His plays are still performed and studied all over the world today!
