Portland is a small community located in southeastern Callaway County, Missouri, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger Jefferson City area, specifically the Metropolitan Statistical Area. You can find Portland just north of the big Missouri River on Route 94. It's about 24 miles (39 km) east-northeast of Jefferson City.

A Glimpse into Portland's Past

The community of Portland was first planned and settled in 1831. Its location was very important because it was right on the Missouri River. This made Portland a busy place for shipping goods. Farmers in Callaway County would bring their crops and products to Portland, and from there, they could be sent by river to other places. The name "Portland" actually comes from this activity, as a "port" is a place where ships load and unload goods.
