The Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA) was a unique art space in Portland, Oregon. It started in 2012 in the basement of a music store called Mississippi Records.

A person named Libby Werbel created PMOMA. She was the "curator," which means she helped choose and organize the art shown there. The people who worked at Mississippi Records also helped run the museum.

A Different Kind of Museum

When Libby Werbel first opened PMOMA, she called it "her fake museum." This was because it was a very small and unusual place. It made people think about what a museum really is.

PMOMA was known for showing "contemporary folk art." This is art made by everyday people, often without formal training. The museum wanted to show art in a new and interesting way.

How PMOMA Was Supported

Even though it was a small museum, PMOMA received support from several groups. These included the Precipice Fund and the Andy Warhol Foundation. This support helped the museum put on its art shows.

Special Events

In September 2016, PMOMA hosted a special event series called "Houseguest." This event took place in a public space called Pioneer Courthouse Square. It was a way for the museum to reach more people outside its usual location.

Museum Closure

After five years of showing art and challenging ideas, the Portland Museum of Modern Art officially closed. This happened in 2017. Even though it was small, PMOMA made a big impact on the art scene in Portland.
