The Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA) was a unique art museum in Portland, Oregon. It was open for five years, from 2012 to 2017. The museum was located in the basement of Mississippi Records, a record store. Libby Werbel, a curator, started the museum. Employees from Mississippi Records also helped run the museum.

The Story of PMOMA

How the Museum Started

When Libby Werbel first created PMOMA, she called it "her fake museum." This was because it was a very small space. It was also different from traditional museums. A news organization called OPB said PMOMA was "a tiny space that wittily challenges ideas about the nature of museums and the art-watching experience." This means it made people think differently about what a museum could be.

Support and Recognition

Even though it was small, PMOMA became well-known. It was even mentioned in Artforum, a famous art magazine. The museum received support from several important groups. These included the Precipice Fund and The Calligram Foundation. It also got help from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The Regional Arts & Culture Council also supported PMOMA.

Special Events and Art

In September 2016, PMOMA held a special event series. It was called Houseguest. This event took place at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The museum focused on showing contemporary folk art. This type of art is made by everyday people. It often uses traditional skills and materials.

The Museum's Closure

After five years of showing unique art, the Portland Museum of Modern Art closed. It officially shut down in 2017.
