About Powellsville

Powellsville is a small community found in the southern part of Ohio. It's not a big city, but a peaceful area where people live. Being an "unincorporated community" means it's part of the larger county, rather than having its own mayor or city council.

A Look at Its Past

Powellsville was first planned out around 1848. A man named William Powell, along with others, helped to "plat" the area. To "plat" means to draw a map showing how land will be divided into streets, blocks, and lots for buildings. The community was named after William Powell, who helped create it.

For many years, Powellsville had its own post office. This post office opened in 1860. It was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for a long time, finally closing its doors in 1906.

A Space Rock Found!

One of the most interesting things found in Powellsville happened in 1990. A man was digging in his yard to remove a tree stump. About 40 centimeters (which is about 16 inches) underground, he found something very unusual. It was a meteorite!

This space rock weighed 4310 grams, which is about 9.5 pounds – heavier than a bowling ball! Scientists identified it as a chondrite (H5) meteorite. Chondrites are the most common type of meteorite. They are made of rocky material and contain tiny, round grains called chondrules. These meteorites are very old, often as old as our solar system itself! Finding a meteorite is a rare and exciting discovery, connecting Powellsville to the vastness of space.
