What Does the Powers House Look Like?
The Powers House is on the west side of West River Road, also known as Maine State Route 104. It sits in a quiet, countryside area in southern Sidney.
How Was the House Built?
The house has two stories and is made of wood. It has a hip roof, which means all sides slope downwards to the walls. Two large chimneys stick up from inside the roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards that overlap.
What Are the Main Features of the House?
The front of the house faces east and has five window sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. It has narrow windows on either side, called sidelight windows. Above the door is a decorative frame and a cornice, which is a fancy molding.
There is another entrance on the south side of the house. This side has three window sections, with the door in the middle. A smaller, one-story part of the house extends from the southwest corner.
What's Inside the Powers House?
Inside, the house has a typical layout for its time. There is a main hallway in the center with rooms on both sides. Many of the original wooden floors and decorative woodwork are still there. You can also see some special stencil designs from the early 1800s on the walls. The house's design is similar in some ways to the Pownalborough Courthouse, another historic building.
Who Lived in the Powers House?
The Powers House was built by Levi Powers. He was one of the very first people to settle in this area.
When Did Levi Powers Arrive?
Levi Powers was given land here and came in 1760. At that time, the area was mostly wild land that he had to clear to build his home.
Who Owned the House After Levi Powers?
In 1783, Jethro Gardiner bought the house. After that, for more than 100 years, the Faught family owned the house. The Faught family were immigrants from Germany.
