What is Montaña del Príncipe Pío?
This hill gets its name from an important person, Prince Gisberto Pío de Saboya. His wife, Juana de Moura, owned land here a long time ago. Over the years, the area has seen many changes, becoming a significant landmark in Madrid.
A Place of History and Barracks
For many years, a large building called the Cuartel de la Montaña (Mountain Barracks) stood on this hill. These barracks were used by soldiers. A very important historical event happened here during the Dos de Mayo Uprising in 1808. On May 3rd, Spanish rebels who were fighting against the French invaders led by Napoleon were executed on this very hill. This dramatic moment was captured in a famous painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya.
From Barracks to a Beautiful Park
Around the 1960s, the old barracks were taken down. In their place, a beautiful green space was created called the Parque del Oeste (Western Park). This park is a popular spot for people to relax and enjoy nature in the city.
The Temple of Debod: A Gift from Egypt
One of the most special things you can find on the Montaña del Príncipe Pío today is the Temple of Debod. This ancient Egyptian temple is over 2,000 years old! It was given to Spain by the Egyptian government as a thank you. Spain had helped Egypt save many old treasures and monuments when the Aswan Dam was being built, which would have flooded many historical sites. The temple was carefully moved, stone by stone, from Egypt to Madrid and rebuilt on this hill, offering amazing views, especially at sunset.
