Praça Diogo de Vasconcelos facts for kids
The Praça Diogo de Vasconcelos (also known as Savassi Square) is a popular public square in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. People often call it "Savassi Square" because of an old bakery that used to be there.
This square is a lively meeting spot for people living in Belo Horizonte. You can find it where the streets Cristóvão Colombo and Getúlio Vargas meet. Other nearby streets are Pernambuco and Antônio de Albuquerque. The square is right in the middle of Savassi, which is an important shopping area.
The official name, Diogo de Vasconcelos Square, honors a politician and historian named Diogo de Vasconcelos. He is known as one of Brazil's first art historians. Even though that's its official name, most people still call it Savassi Square. This name comes from the Savassi Bakery, which was once at the corner of Rua Pernambuco and Cristóvão Colombo avenue. A coffee shop called Arturo's later replaced the original bakery.
Over the years, the shops around the square have changed. It used to have many small shops, restaurants, and snack bars. But since 2006, more mobile phone companies have opened stores there. There was even a protest when the traditional Café Três Corações (Three Hearts Café) had to close for a new phone store. After the protest, the cafe reopened in a smaller space, with its entrance now on Rua Antonio de Albuquerque.
