Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Prairie Wolf Slough, also known as Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve, is a special natural area located in Deerfield, Illinois. It's just north of Deerfield High School. This preserve is a great place for people to learn, play, exercise, and enjoy nature.

What is Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve?

Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve is a large area of land, about 431 acres (1.7 km2) in size. That's like more than 300 football fields! It has 2 miles (3 km) of trails, which are perfect for walking, running, or biking.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The name "Prairie Wolf" has an interesting history. It comes from a Native American name for an early pioneer named John Kinzie Clark. He was one of the first settlers in the areas of Deerfield and Jefferson Park. His Native American name was "nonimoa," which means "prairie wolf" in English.

Why is it Important?

This land was bought by the government in the 1970s to protect it. Since 1994, the preserve has been carefully managed. One way they do this is by regularly burning small parts of the land. This might sound strange, but it's a natural process that helps the land stay healthy. It allows native plants to grow better and creates a good home for local animals. This also stops too many unwanted plants from taking over.

Today, the preserve is used by students from the nearby high school and people who work in the surrounding offices. It's a valuable place for education, recreation, and simply enjoying the outdoors.
