History of the Presidency
The job of President of Cameroon began in 1960. This was after Cameroon gained its independence from France.
First President
The first person to hold this important office was Ahmadou Ahidjo. He became President on May 5, 1960. He served until November 6, 1982.
Current President
After Ahmadou Ahidjo, Paul Biya took over as President. He has been the President of Cameroon since November 6, 1982.
Presidential Term Limits
A "term limit" means there's a rule about how many times a person can be elected President. For a while, there were rules about how long the President could serve. However, in 2008, these term limits were removed for President Biya. This means he can be re-elected without a limit on how many terms he serves.
Latest Presidential Election
The most recent election for President of Cameroon happened in 2018. In this election, Paul Biya was re-elected.
