Prices Fork is a small community located in Montgomery County, Virginia, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area identified by the government for counting people, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
In 2010, about 1,066 people lived in Prices Fork. The community is located about three miles west of Blacksburg. It is also close to the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, often called Virginia Tech. Prices Fork is part of the larger Blacksburg–Christiansburg metropolitan area. This area includes all of Montgomery County, along with the cities of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford.
Prices Fork got its name from the Price, or Preisch, family. They were early settlers in the area.
Today, Prices Fork has one church, the Prices Fork United Methodist Church. It also has a Grange Hall and an elementary school for students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Several buildings in the community are considered historic. The Prices Fork Historic District, Evans House No. 2, Joseph McDonald Farm, and Adam Wall House are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes important historical sites in the United States.
The old Prices Fork Elementary School has been updated. It now has apartments for different income levels. It also includes a restaurant, a brewery, and a shared kitchen space.
History of Prices Fork
Prices Fork is located in an area sometimes called the German New River Settlement. Before 1745, German immigrants moved here from Pennsylvania. They began to settle in the Prices Fork-Tom's Creek area. This region is near the horseshoe-shaped bends of the New River. These German families were among the first European settlers in this part of Virginia.
How Prices Fork Got Its Name
The community of Prices Fork was named after the Price (or Preisch) family. They were early German settlers in the area. Their land was located on both sides of the main road. Over time, Prices Fork grew into a small village. This growth happened around the mid-1800s. Some of the buildings in the community are part of the Prices Fork Historic District. This district is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
Preserving Local History
The Price Family Historical Society works to keep records for members of the Price family. These are families who settled in the Prices Fork area long ago.
