Prince & Knight is a colorful children's picture book. It was written by Daniel Haack and illustrated by Stevie Lewis. The book tells the exciting story of a brave young prince. At the end of their adventure, the prince and knight get married.

This book was first published in English by Little Bee Books in 2018. It was the first book from a special team-up. This partnership was between Bonnier Publishing USA and GLAAD. Their goal is to include and celebrate positive LGBTQ+ characters and stories in books for kids.

Prince & Knight has been very popular. It has won several awards. The book has also led to some discussions. Some people have different opinions about whether it is suitable for all young readers.

The Story of Prince & Knight

Once upon a time, there was a prince. He was next in line to become king of his kingdom. His parents, the king and queen, decided he needed to find a partner. This partner would help him rule.

So, the three of them traveled to nearby kingdoms. They met many different princesses. But the prince did not find what he was looking for in any of them.

While the prince was away, bad news arrived. A dragon was attacking his kingdom! The prince quickly rushed back home to fight the monster. Just then, a knight arrived to help him.

The prince and knight worked together. The knight used his shiny shield to blind the dragon. This allowed the prince to trap the beast successfully. However, while doing this, the prince lost his balance and fell. The knight quickly rode his horse and caught the prince in his arms.

The two heroes thanked each other for saving their lives. They soon fell in love. Their marriage was fully supported by everyone. The community cheered loudly at their wedding. The prince's parents were also very happy for them.

About the Book's Creation

Prince & Knight was first released as a hardcover book. This happened on May 1, 2018. It was the first main book in a new partnership. This partnership was between Bonnier Publishing USA and GLAAD. The book's launch received a lot of attention from the news. Many news outlets talked about it.

Daniel Haack, the author, gave interviews to GLAAD and HuffPost. He explained why he wrote Prince & Knight. He noticed there weren't many LGBTQ+ characters in children's stories. Especially, he wanted to see more human characters.

When he created the story, he thought it would be fun. He wanted to play with the ideas of a Prince Charming and a Knight in shining armor. He wanted to show kids that gay people can be brave heroes. They are also just as worthy of being in love as anyone else.

Sarah Kate Ellis, who is the President and CEO of GLAAD, spoke about the partnership. She talked about how important it is to have diverse characters in books. She said that books are a natural way to teach awareness, kindness, and acceptance early on. She also said it's important for her own children and others to see their families in stories.

Besides the original hardcover book, other versions were published. A French version, Le Prince Et Le Chevalier, was released. A Japanese version, 王子と騎士, was also published. These were by Scholastic Canada and Oakla Publishing. A special paperback edition came out in 2019. This was for Scholastic Book Club, which is often used in schools. A board book version, which is great for very young children, was released in 2020.

A companion book was also released in April 2019. It is called Maiden & Princess. Daniel Haack co-authored it with Isabel Galupo. Becca Human illustrated this book.
