Giovanni Forti Natoli (also known as Gianforte Natoli) was an important nobleman from Sicily, an island in Italy. He was the son of Blasco Natoli Lanza and Domenica Giambruno Perna. Giovanni Natoli became famous for buying land and being given important titles by kings.
Becoming a Nobleman
Giovanni Natoli started his life as a baron. A baron was a noble who owned a large area of land called a barony. He was the baron of places named S. Bartolomeo and Belice.
Buying Sperlinga
On August 20, 1597, Giovanni Natoli bought a very important area called the barony of Sperlinga. He bought it from another nobleman, Giovanni Ventimiglia. This purchase cost him a lot of money: 30,834 ounces of gold!
After buying Sperlinga, King Philip II of Spain, who ruled Sicily at the time, gave Giovanni Natoli a special permission. This permission was called a licentia populandi cum privilegium aedificandi. This means he had the right to invite people to live in Sperlinga and to build new homes and buildings there. This helped the area grow.
Becoming a Prince
Later, in 1627, Giovanni Natoli received an even higher title. King Philip IV of Spain made him the prince of Sperlinga. This meant he was now one of the most important nobles in Sicily.
Family Life
Giovanni Natoli was married two times. His first wife was Maria Cottone Aragona. She was the daughter of Stefano, who was the count of Bauso.
His second wife was Melchiora Orioles Moncada. She was the daughter of Orazio, the baron of San Pietro di Patti. Giovanni and Melchiora had a son together named Francesco Natoli.
His Death
Giovanni Natoli passed away on July 15, 1633.
