Professional Golfers Association facts for kids
Professional Golfers' Association, often called PGA, is a common name for groups that support professional male golfers. These groups help golfers who play for a living. There are many PGA groups around the world.
The women's version of these groups is called the Ladies Professional Golf Association, or LPGA for short. Just like the PGA, there are LPGA groups in different countries, like the LPGA of Japan or LPGA of Korea.
What is the PGA?
The letters PGA stand for Professional Golfers' Association. These groups are made for people who play golf as their job. They help make sure golf is played fairly and that professional golfers have support.
There are different PGA groups in various countries. For example, there's the Professional Golfers' Association of America and the Professional Golfers' Association (Great Britain & Ireland). Each group works to help golf professionals in their own region.
PGA and Golf Tours
You might hear the name PGA linked to big golf tournaments. Some of the world's top professional golf tours use "PGA" in their names. These tours are where the best golfers compete for prizes.
For example, the PGA Tour runs many famous tournaments in the United States. The PGA European Tour does the same for tournaments mostly in Europe. Even though these tours use "PGA" in their names, they are now separate from the original Professional Golfers' Associations that helped start them.
Who Do PGAs Help?
In the past, Professional Golfers' Associations helped all kinds of professional golfers. This included those who played in big tournaments and those who worked at golf clubs.
Today, many PGA groups, like those in the United States and the United Kingdom, mainly focus on golfers who work at golf courses. These are often called "club professionals" or "teaching professionals." They help people learn golf or manage golf course operations. These PGAs don't have as much to do with the famous golfers you see on TV playing in big tournaments.
