Promite facts for kids
Promite is a yummy, dark brown spread that tastes a bit salty. It's made from something called yeast extract. You can spread it on sandwiches or toast, just like Vegemite or Marmite.
This popular spread was created in the 1950s by a company called Henry Lewis & Company. They sold it under the Masterfoods brand. Later, a big company named Mars, Incorporated bought them in 1967. Promite is still made and mostly sold in Australia today.
Like Vegemite, Promite is made from leftover yeast from brewing and vegetable extracts. But Promite has a sweeter taste because sugar is added to it.
What's in Promite?
Promite is made from yeast extract and vegetables. It also contains some vitamins that come naturally from its ingredients.
In 2013, the makers of Promite changed the recipe a little. They removed some added vitamins like Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), and Niacin (B3). They also took out two flavor enhancers. This change helped some people who were sensitive to those vitamins. The company said it didn't change the taste or how Promite felt in your mouth.
Even with these changes, Promite still has some vitamins from its natural ingredients. Here's a look at some of the vitamins you can find in Promite:
Name | Vitamin Type | Amount (per 100g) |
---|---|---|
Thiamin | B1 | 4mg |
Riboflavin | B2 | 1mg |
Niacin | B3 | 50mg |
Pantothenic Acid | B5 | 12mg |
Vitamin B6 | B6 | 3mg |
