Provinces of Greece facts for kids
The provinces of Greece were special areas used to divide the country. Think of them like smaller sections within bigger regions called prefectures. These provinces helped organize different parts of Greece.
In 1887, the provinces stopped being the main way the government managed things. However, they were still useful for other important tasks. For example, they helped with money matters, like taxes and budgets. They were also used for schools and education. Plus, they played a role in elections, helping to organize voting.
Before World War II, Greece had 139 provinces. After the war, some new islands called the Dodecanese joined Greece. This made the total number of provinces grow to 147. The biggest province was Dodoni.
