Prudencesa Renfro, known as Pru, is an American singer and songwriter. She grew up in South Park, Houston. Pru became well-known after she signed with Capitol Records. She released her first album, called Pru, in 2000.

Early Life and Starting Out
Prudencesa Renfro grew up in Houston, Texas, with her mother and three older brothers and sisters. She loved music from a young age. Pru started singing in local bars while she worked as a bartender.
She wrote her own songs and poems during high school and college at Texas Southern University. She would often put her words to the music of famous artists. Some of these artists included Michael Jackson, Sade, and Miles Davis.
Later, Pru moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming a musician. She became known as Pru. An executive from Capitol Records, Roy Lott, signed her to a record deal. He was very impressed by her songwriting and her voice.
Her First Album: Pru
Pru's first album, named Pru, came out on November 7, 2000. Capitol Records worked hard to promote the album. They wanted Pru's music to reach many different people.
The album Pru did well on the music charts. It reached number 176 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also reached number 38 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart.
Two songs from the album were released as singles: "Candles" and "Aaroma (of a Man)". "Candles" was a popular song. It reached number 68 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. People often compared Pru's music style to other popular artists. These included Lauryn Hill, Macy Gray, and Erykah Badu.
