Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A psychiatrist is a special kind of doctor who helps people with their mental health. They are experts in understanding the brain and how it affects feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Psychiatrists can also prescribe medication to help people feel better.

What is a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has chosen to specialize in psychiatry. This means they have studied the human body and mind very deeply. Their main goal is to help people who are struggling with their mental health. They work with patients to understand their problems and find the best ways to help them.

How Do Psychiatrists Help People?

Psychiatrists use different methods to help their patients. They might talk with you to understand your feelings and thoughts. This is called talk therapy or psychotherapy. They also know a lot about how the brain works. Because they are medical doctors, they can prescribe medicines if needed. These medicines can help balance chemicals in the brain that might be causing problems.

What Kinds of Problems Do They Treat?

Psychiatrists help people with many different kinds of mental health challenges. Some common ones include:

  • Depression: When someone feels very sad or hopeless for a long time.
  • Anxiety: When someone worries a lot or feels very nervous.
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): When someone has trouble focusing or staying still.
  • Eating disorders: When someone has unhealthy eating habits and thoughts about food or their body.
  • Mood swings: When someone's feelings change very quickly.

They work to help people understand their feelings and learn ways to cope with difficult situations.

Becoming a Psychiatrist

Becoming a psychiatrist takes a lot of hard work and many years of schooling.

Training in the United States

In the United States, someone who wants to be a psychiatrist first goes to university for about four years. After that, they attend Medical School for another four years. When they finish medical school, they earn a degree like M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).

After medical school, these new doctors must complete a special training program called a residency. This residency lasts for three or four years and focuses only on psychiatry. During this time, they learn how to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

Training in Other Countries

In other countries, the path to becoming a psychiatrist is similar. Doctors still go through many years of medical training. However, the exact steps and names of the degrees might be a little different. No matter where they train, all psychiatrists learn how to help people with their mental health.
