Biography
Early Life and Career
Publius Silius Nerva's father was also a senator. Nerva was a strong supporter of Emperor Augustus. Because of this, he received many important jobs throughout his career.
He worked his way up through the different levels of Roman government. This path was called the cursus honorum. In 20 BC, he became a consul. This was a big deal because he was a novus homo. This means he was the first in his family to reach such a high rank. Emperor Augustus often promoted new people like him.
Military and Governorships
After being a consul, Nerva was sent to Hispania Citerior (modern-day Spain) in 19 BC. He was a special governor there, called a legatus. He helped a famous general named Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa finish the long and difficult Cantabrian Wars.
After his time in Spain, he was sent to Illyricum (an area in the Balkans). He was a legate there from 17 BC to 16 BC.
Family
Nerva had three sons. All of them also became consuls later in their lives. They were Publius Silius (consul in AD 3), Aulus Licinius Nerva Silianus (consul in AD 7), and Gaius Silius (consul in AD 13).
