History of Puerto Escondido
Early Settlers Arrive
The story of Puerto Escondido began in 1854. Three brothers, Máximo, José Blas, and Nicomedes Díaz, arrived. They came from a place called Barú. They settled in the area now known as Puerto Escondido Viejo.
Another family, the Barrios, also came from Barú Island. They heard amazing stories from sailors. These stories were about how fertile the land was. They also heard about the kind people living there. So, the Barrios family decided to move and settle in this area too.
Growing and Moving the Town
As more people came, the community grew bigger. They decided to move their homes. They chose a new spot that is now called the Simón Bolívar neighborhood. This new location was perfect because it was near a lagoon. The lagoon provided fresh water for everyone.
The "new" Puerto Escondido became a very important village on the coast. It grew so much that it was officially recognized.
Becoming a District
On April 27, 1923, the Assembly of the Department of Bolívar made an important decision. They declared Puerto Escondido a district. This meant it was a part of the larger municipality of Lorica. This was a big step for the growing town.
A few years later, on April 24, 1928, the Bolívar Assembly made things even clearer. They stated that Puerto Escondido included several smaller villages. These villages were Yuca, Mangle, Alta Clara, Tierra Adentro, Agua Viva, Palmar, Morindó, and Puerto Escondido itself. This showed how much the area had developed.
