Leading the Oneida Nation
After the war, Purcell Powless first worked in a steel factory. But he soon became very interested in helping his tribe. He joined the Business Committee, a group that helps lead the Oneida Nation.
In 1967, Purcell Powless was chosen as the Tribal Chairman. This is like being the main leader or president of the tribe. He took over from Norbert Hill. The people kept re-electing him, and he served as Chairman until 1990. That's a long time to lead!
New Ideas for Growth
As Chairman, Purcell Powless brought many new ideas to the Oneida Nation. He wanted to find ways to make money for the tribe. This money would help improve life for everyone.
