In 1967, Purcell Powless was chosen as the Tribal Chairman. This is like being the main leader or president of the tribe. He took over from Norbert Hill. The people kept re-electing him, and he served as Chairman until 1990. That's a long time to lead!

As Chairman, Purcell Powless brought many new ideas to the Oneida Nation. He wanted to find ways to make money for the tribe. This money would help improve life for everyone. He started things like bingo games and a lottery in 1988. He also helped open a gaming casino. These new businesses created jobs and brought money to the tribe.
