Purge facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A purge is when people in charge remove others they don't want from a group. This could be from a government, a team, or even a whole society. It's like cleaning out a closet, but with people!

What is a Purge?

A purge happens when powerful people decide that certain individuals are not helpful or are causing problems. They then remove these people from their positions or from the group. This action is often done to make the group stronger or to get rid of anyone who disagrees.

Types of Purges

Purges can happen in different ways. Some are peaceful, while others can be very serious. It depends on how the people in power decide to remove those they don't want.

Nonviolent Purges

Sometimes, a purge is nonviolent. This means the people who are being purged are simply asked to leave their jobs or positions. They might lose their role in a government or an organization. There is no physical harm involved in these types of purges.

Violent Purges

Other times, purges can be violent. In these cases, the people who are purged might face serious consequences. They could be sent away from their home country, which is called exile. They might also be put in imprisonment. In some very extreme situations, people might even disappear or be harmed.
